In a dramatic video, a member of the Coast Guard from Clearwater Air Station can be seen descending from a helicopter to reach the man and his dog.
With the boat compromised, both jumped into the rough waters and were hoisted up in a rescue basket. The video ends with touching scenes of the man holding his dog and expressing gratitude to his rescuers.
The pair were taken to Southwest Florida International Airport, where they were met by emergency services.
